Poster Printing Services: Things to Consider…

When it comes to poster printing, we ask all our clients to consider a few key points:
Purpose
Before you consider product options, it’s important to get a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your posters.
If you’re a business in the retail or hospitality sectors, large posters can be highly effective at advertising special offers or generating passing trade. Smaller prints, meanwhile, can be used at the point of sale as a way to encourage impulse sales.
For office-based businesses, posters of all sizes can be a useful format for alerting staff to upcoming team events, or for long-term use displaying safety information.
Location

As well as considering what you want your poster to do, it’s important to pay mind to where it’s going to go. For instance, if your print is destined for outdoor use, you will need to seek a water-resistant paper stock that offers extra durability. Conversely, for a poster designed to advertise an upcoming office event, you can save money by opting for a cheaper, less hard-wearing paper.
Size
We know, this is an obvious one, but with a range of standard sizes and custom sizes available, it’s important to consider which is likely to work best for your purpose and location.
At JMF, we use the latest in printing technology to produce posters of all sizes; from A5 to A1 poster printing, and custom sizes all the way up to 1.2m x 2.4m. Need something larger? We have a range of alternate signs and banners to suit any space.
Paper Stock

As mentioned, it’s essential to make sure the type of paper used for your posters is suitable for their display location. When looking at paper options, take note of the paper weight; this is measured in grams per square metre (g/m2), with a higher number representing a thicker paper. Heavier papers are more tear-resistant and long-lasting, making them more appropriate for displaying brand message materials over a long period of time.
Paper type can also play a significant role in the vibrancy of the images produced. If having great quality images is more of a priority than durability, you might want to consider a premium gloss paper. Though relatively lightweight, gloss paper media offers supreme print quality, vibrancy, and colour reproduction—ideal for fine art, and high-resolution marketing materials.
Colour

Speaking of colour reproduction; when it comes to A1 poster printing—or printing on other large-format media—it’s vital to ensure the colouring in your artwork is consistent with the message it’s trying to convey. For example, a neutral or pastel colour palette might look great on a poster which promotes your brand’s personality, but is it ideal for call-to-action or health and safety material?
It’s also worth considering whether your posters might work in a black-and-white or monochrome format. We have lower pricing on our premium monochrome printing services—perfect for businesses looking to save money on their promotional materials.
Single-Sided or Double-Sided?
When it comes to poster printing, many of our customers only consider the single-sided option. However, whilst demanding a higher up-front cost, long-lasting double-sided posters can represent great value for money. For example, if your business is looking to create advertising or marketing materials, a double-sided poster can effectively give you two single-sided posters at a lower price than if you were to process two separate runs.
Is Your Artwork ‘Print-Ready’ Artwork?
When it comes to digital poster printing, the quality of the finished page is only ever as good as the design files that you upload. Unless you’re graphics professional or a business with a design team in-house, jargon like “dpi”, “colour profile”, and “image sourcing” might leave you scratching your head; that’s why our expert design team have put together a jargon-free checklist for preparing your art and design materials.
Resolution

Whilst digital images can be suitably displayed at 72dpi, for physical printed materials, a resolution of at least 300dpi is essential to yield a high-quality print. If you’re looking for an A1 poster or larger, we recommend you upload the highest resolution available. For company events and banner prints, this is especially important, as materials printed at low resolution will not reflect well on your brand.
Bleed
Regardless of poster size, you should include a minimum 3mm border (or bleed) around the design files you supply. In addition, we recommend the important elements of your print (text, drawings, logos, etc.) are within an additional 4mm of the edge to ensure their preservation.
Embed
Modern design software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will choose to “link” to a graphic file rather than embed it in the design file itself. Whilst this reduces file size, it means that artwork is only visible on the device on which it was created. If you choose to provide us with raw files, ensure you upload files that have all elements embedded.
Colour Profile
RGB is the colour profile of choice for digital and website display, but to faithfully reproduce a full range of colours in print, you should upload design files in a CMYK format. For information on the best way to convert your files, contact our design team today.
Usage Rights
For business poster printing, it’s vital to ensure you have the commercial rights to any image or font materials contained in the designs you upload. It’s natural to look first and foremost at what will look best on your wall, but failing to account for licencing can land you and your company in hot water.
